Critique by Judge Margaret Bourn (Bournbeau Golden Retrievers) South Australia

Thank you for the invitation to judge your lovely goldens in Hobart.  It was indeed a pleasure to see so many very good exhibits, which created a real,  but enjoyable, challenge for me as in many cases I found myself splitting hairs (dogs’, of course).

The overall depth of quality was quite impressive and there was a consistency of type running throughout.  In general, I was impressed with so many good body shapes – good forechest , depth in heart, well-ribbed back, short-coupled  and level toplines. In fact this could make my critique rather monotonous reading.    Also, I saw many lovely dark eyes, giving gentle expressions and it was good to see ‘legs’.

Short-comings I noted were: (a couple of) questionable bites and a number not carrying the sort of coat I would have expected in cooler climes.

In general though, it seems to me that Tasmanians have worked out a pretty good formula for producing very good specimens of our lovely breed.

Both Marg Dalos (property classes judge) and I found it pleasing to see the friendly rivalry and camaraderie among exhibitors and the grace with which our decisions were received. We thank you for the congeniality extended towards us and we were delighted with the unexpected bonus of Paul and Patricia’s hospitality in Launceston.

And thank you for the beautiful book “Wychwood”.  I am thoroughly enjoying reading it and looking at the pictures of the magnificent gardens.  If I ever get to the apple isle again I plan to visit that beautiful place.  Don’t know how you knew my other love (apart from dogs) is gardening.

Here are my comments on the placings.

DOGS

Minor Puppy Dog

  1. Kaparla Game Plan

A sweet head, though a little fine for a boy, with a beautiful expression created by a lovely dark eye.  Good boning in legs, with a straight front with good feet.  A nicely balanced young man showing potential for when he bodies up.

Puppy dog

Kaparla Chianti Classic

At just 8 months this boy entered the ring confidently displaying correct head and neck placement which gave a lovely head carriage flowing to a level topline.  Lovely eye in a well-proportioned head with very good pigment.  Needs to body up, which should come in time.

Junior Dog.

Tashanbrue Eager to Fly

A beautiful outline with correct body shape. Nicely balanced head with good ear-set and dark eye. Head flowed to a strong neck over well laid back shoulders to level top-line and correct tail set.  Lovely coat.  Could do with more spring of rib.

Intermediate Dog

  1. Giltedge Do You Like Apples (AI)

Good-sized dog with strong boning and carried himself with presence into the ring. Well-laid shoulders balance by strong hindquarters.  Strong straight front legs with prosternum flowing to deep in heart, good spring of rib and well-ribbed back.  Masculine head, correctly proportioned with balance of muzzle to skull on good reach of neck.  Ground-covering gait, holding a level top-line.

  2. Goldlake Its About Time

Another handsome young dog with a lot going for him, but looking less mature. Balanced masculine head with good depth of muzzle and a beautiful, gentle expression created by a dark eye and good pigment.  Overall correct body shape.  Moved powerfully and carried a good coat.  Good feet. Still has some maturing to do.

State Bred Dog

  1. CH Tweedwater Royal Fusilier.                                                                  CHALLENGE DOG AND BOB

Making a commanding entrance this dog laid down the gauntlet to all the others with his powerful, ground-covering stride holding a level top-line and showing a correct tail-set and carriage. He cut the correctly balanced symmetrical outline with a good length of strong neck flowing to well-laid shoulders, with fore-chest to deep through heart, well-ribbed back and short in loin. Good boning and straight front legs of good length.  Masculine head of good balance, with correct muzzle length and depth and good pigment. A beautiful coat completed the picture.

Australian Bred dog

  1. Dual CH (T) Ralun Zen There was Wilson TDSDX

Another eye-catching exhibit which took a while to get into his gait: and then it was good to see him move so well. Fit-looking and up-standing with good body proportions and leg length.  Carried himself well with his head well set on to good reach of neck which flowed well to the withers. Deep in chest.  Broad in head with kindly expression.

  2. Giltedge Cat Got Your Tongue

Of a more moderate size, with good boning, straight front legs to good feet. Very good front and rear construction giving balanced angles fore and aft. Strong hindquarters gave powerful drive on the move.  A larger body would have balance the head better.

Open dog

  1. Oceanviews Happy Days                                                                              RESERVE CHALLENGE DOG

With such a smooth, ground-covering  gait it was a pleasure to watch this dog on the move. A good length and strength of neck over well-laid shoulders, flowing smoothly to a level topline and correct tail-set and carriage. Good boning and feet.  His masculine head with correct proportions, including his lovely big, black nose and depth of muzzle gave him a most kindly expression.

  2. Beaucroft Show Me The Way

Heavier set and bigger-boned ,this boy of substance presented as strong and powerful.  Very good boning and lovely feet. Good front assembly, but a slightly sloping top-line was created by his rear angulation. A very kindly expression on a masculine head.  Blessed with lots more coat than most.

Veteran Dog

  1. Supreme CH NZ CH Kaparla Wicketkeeper

This dog entered the ring like he owned it and powered around, covering ground, holding his top-line all the way, with correct tail carriage. Although only of moderate size he is well proportioned in every respect.  Gentle expression with good pigment and dark eye.  A glorious coat added to an impressive presentation.

  2. GR CH Giltedge The Poet

Well-boned, strong-looking with substance.  Sound, with very good front assembly balanced by strong hindquarters with good width of upper and second thigh. Good spring of rib, short-coupled.  A gentle and kindly expression. Would like to have seen a better reach of neck.

    BITCHES

    Baby Puppy Bitch

  1. Giltedge Roll Out the Red Carpet

What a promising youngster.  Lovely frame to grow on to. Beautifully balanced and sweetest of heads with lovely dark eye.  Good length of neck, level topline and correct tailset. Lovely little mover.

    Minor Puppy Bitch

  1. Kaparla Lunar Mission

Another lovely mover holding a level topline.  Correctly shaped body, well-ribbed back and short coupled, good width of upper thigh.  Very sweet expression with gorgeous dark eye, good pigment.

  2. Kaparla Strike a Pose

Animated happy mover showing a lovely flow of neck to shoulder along to strong hindquarters.   Good boning in straight front legs.  Finer in head construction, with lovely dark pigment.

    Puppy Bitch

  1. Goldlake Pages in Time

Well proportioned body with good reach of neck, well-ribbed back and short coupled. Good boning in straight front, if a little wide.  Great hindquarters which gave tremendous drive on the move.  Well proportioned head and muzzle balance with good pigment and dark eye giving a lovely expression.

    Junior Bitch

  1. Heathbrook Live the Dream

This neat little package is a born show-girl, standing four-square in perfect balance every time she stopped. Her handler did not need to put a finger on her as she presented herself. Looking the complete picture, her neck flowed to a tabletop topline and correct tail-set, over well-constructed and balanced angles with her fore and aft assemblies.  Good spring of rib.  Lovely head proportions, plus an expressive dark eye and a lustrous coat created a very feminine picture.  Pity she did not move so well on the day.

  2. Ch Kaparla Take Your time

Longer cast than the previous exhibit with good boning in straight legs.  Good forechest through to deep in chest balanced by width of upper  and second thigh.  Good mover holding a level-topline.  Nicely balanced head with good muzzle depth.

  3. Goldlake Springtime Story

Presented as strong and sound, with well-laid shoulder and front assembly, balanced by strong hindquarters.   Good boning.  Correct body shape, well-ribbed back with a good spring of rib. Good balance of muzzle to skull.  In lovely coat.

    Intermediate Bitch

  1. CH Kaparla Total Recall

One of the prettiest and feminine girls here with a gorgeous eye in a beautiful head of correct proportions and lovely coat.  Her neck flowed over well-laid shoulders along a well-ribbed back body and level topline. Good depth of chest. Moved with style.

  2. Oceanviews Hotter Than July

Blessed with a lovely coat and good straight boning.  Forechest carried through to deep chest, well-ribbed back, short coupled with good width of upper thigh in strong hindquarters. A little strong in head.

    State Bred Bitch

  1. CH Kaparla On A Mission                                                                               RESERVE CHALLENGE BITCH

Beautifully balanced in every way. From her correctly proportioned head with its sweet expression, along a good reach of neck which flowed along a level topline. Straight legs in front with good prosternum, deep in heart, well-ribbed back, a good spring of rib and upper and 2nd thigh.  A lovely coat completed the picture.  She really took my eye, but unfortunately let herself down on the move.

  2. CH Goldlake Once Upon a Time

Happy girl.  A lovely head with good balance of muzzle to skull and gorgeous expression. Strong boning and straight front legs with well constructed front and lay of shoulder giving balance with strong hind-quarters, though slightly long in loin. Correct coat.

    Australian Bred Bitch

  1. CH Naragold Georgie Girl                                                                                               CHALLENGE BITCH

A classic beauty.  A superb mover: smooth, effortless, ground-covering with reach and drive.  Lovely head carriage flowing along strong neck to a level topline - which she held all the while - over balanced angles fore and aft to correct tailset and carriage. With her pretty dark eye and a very sweet expression in a nicely balanced head and wearing her best dress (coat) she presented as the complete feminine picture.  A worthy winner.

    Open Bitch

  1. CH Giltedge There’s  Butterfly (AI)

Strongly built with good boning, holding a level topline to correct tail-set.  Outline of correct proportions with good lay of shoulder, deep in chest, well-ribbed back and short coupled. Head balanced with broad muzzle.  Moved with power.

  2. CH Kaparla Got Your Back

Very good lay of shoulder and deep in heart provided good front construction, balanced with powerful hindquarters.  Lovely head with sweet expression enhanced by a beautiful dark eye.  In glamorous coat.

    Neuter Bitch

  1. Giltedge Evita

Absolutely fabulous.  A joy to watch, both on the move and standing, holding a level top-line all the while. Of correct proportions: with good lay of shoulder balanced by strong hindquarters and matching turn of stifle. Good front assembly and spring of rib, well ribbed back and short coupled, balanced by good rear construction. Beautifully balanced feminine head with expressive dark eye.  In lovely coat, she presented as the complete package.
